A cottage in a village near Bath
It is not only contemporary homes and interiors that can benefit from lighting design. The aim of this lighting design was to highlight the period features and artwork in this listed property, while bringing a feeling of warmth to the home. In keeping with the owners request, the use of scene/mood controllers also enabled them to add drama and create distinct lighting moods, for example, to enhance art work, create a dining scene, or create an evening scene of warm background glow from the fireplaces, all at the touch of a button. Our concept was that the rooms should have layers of light, and light and dark spaces, as these contrasts would add drama and warmth to the predominantly north facing interiors.
The perimeter downlights were placed at a balance point that would comfortably illuminate wall hung art and also provide ambient fill light into the living area.
One of the requirements of the lighting scheme was to enhance the period features of the property. Here, these stone alcoves are lit by hidden tungsten low voltage lamps which add a gleam to the objects on display.
A good balance of different types of lighting is the key to enhancing atmosphere, here the pretty and colourful glow from these porcelain lamps creates an ethereal atmosphere. These pendants also delineate this part of the room as a dining area and cast a flattering diffuse glow onto the diners. Case study continued...
